Quirk’s Story
Quirk was born to Midway resident Laura Joans in the back of one of Midway’s Main Street shops in 2002. Laura’s special talents and love of cooking quickly made it Midway’s hot spot for lunch. It became so popular in fact, that in 2004 Laura moved her then teeny café to its current and spacious location in one of Midway’s most beautiful historic buildings just down the street from its original location. Laura sold the business to Rob and Sarah Vandegrift and their son, Grayson in 2007.
Soon after purchasing Quirk, the Vandegrifts worked toward opening for dinner but the electrical capacity of the old building would not allow for the introduction of the equipment needed to prepare dinners. A second coffee pot would blow a fuse! In November, 2008 Rob, Sarah and Grayson were able to purchase the building and could finally begin the much needed upgrades and renovations to work toward opening for dinner. The staff came in during that time and helped with painting and cleaning and stripping and staining so everybody has a little ownership in the exciting results.
Beneath the dining room, Rob is renovating the basement with its brick floors and stone walls where, soon, depending on the day or night, folks can listen to live music, relax, read or watch a ballgame while having a cocktail, a cup of tea or a bite to eat.
Outdoors, a charming patio is a popular spot during summer months. The train still rolls through several times a day giving the small town a feeling of days gone by. There just aren’t very many places like Midway anymore and there aren’t very many places like Quirk!
